Addy, Magic. Accomplices. Friends with skin in the game. Ben and Jenn too. Really, even with all the constant fear and stress and frustration... Ian had, in some ways never been happier. Because they were all so much closer than they had ever been. Well, except Ben. But they'd get Ben home. They would. And Ian would make sure they got to vet the DJ for their wedding...
"Huh, wonder if I could get Ben into gaming now that he's been through all this...." Ian mused to themself.

Date: 2023-06-16 04:16 am (UTC)Thus far, everything seemed stable, which was good. But it would likely be best to get a closer look. Stepping closer to the anomaly's epicenter, Clu reached out with all the senses available to him, wanting to be absolutely certain. So focused was he on his investigation, though, that he didn't spare a thought of what that anomaly might do to him. Nothing harmful, at least not directly so. But unbeknownst to him, it could disrupt whatever aspect of his nature as an Ashura that normally kept him invisible and otherwise imperceptible.
Which meant that Ian might just see a man in an odd outfit accented with stripes of glowing yellow light fading into view near the entrance to the accelerator.

Date: 2023-06-16 04:29 am (UTC)A white turtleneck and slacks didn't exactly have any place that a weapon could hav been easily hidden, so Ian hardly looked intimidating. Even les so when thy arrived somewhat winded. But they did their best. "GET AWAY FROM THERE!" Ian tried to order, never mind it cam out a little desperate.

Date: 2023-06-16 04:51 am (UTC)He briefly considered teleporting away or otherwise fleeing the scene, but to do so would only make it seem like he'd been there to cause trouble, when in fact the opposite was true. Probably better to try an explain himself, however difficult that might be. As the User he'd seen before came rushing in in an apparent panic, Clu turned to face them, holding up his hands in a fairly universal gesture to indicate non-threatening status.
He offered them a very sheepish smile, hoping it would be further proof of his lack of threat. "Uh.... greetings?", he said. Because really what could one say in a situation like this?

Alright then. Hallway it would have to be. They crossed their arms and tried to look intimidating. "How did you get in here, anyway?"

Date: 2023-06-16 06:06 am (UTC)"The latter is what led me here. I was traveling between worlds and detected a space-time anomaly. I wanted to make certain that it wasn't a Flaw or a potential one, or to repair it if it was. Normally I'm undetectable by the inhabitants of the worlds I visit unless I choose not to be, so I wasn't expecting my visit to cause any trouble, but apparently there's some factor with the anomaly that I didn't account for though, and well... here we are."

Date: 2023-06-16 06:29 am (UTC)"There are a lot of claims in there, that on the surface, seem frankly unbelievable." Of course, part of Ian's job was to accept that there were things out there they didn't understand yet. However there was a long stretch between that and believing everything without proof. "Can you prove any of it? If you're a computer program, could you upload yourself into one of my clean systems if you were near it?" Because no way were they letting an unknown program anywhere near Ziggy's code. "Could you take me to another dimension and back again?"
no subject
Date: 2023-06-16 11:13 pm (UTC)"As for taking you to another dimension... it might be technically possible, but I don't know how safe it would be for someone who hasn't first Wakened in Nautilus to travel the Between, and Waking is a natural process, not something you or I can trigger. Even for people who been through Nautilus, it can still be dangerous. I wouldn't want to try it with you outside of an emergency."
"I can show you my disc, though if you'll allow it, and let you examine me physically. It should be pretty clear from that that I'm not human. And I can demonstrate some of the other abilities my upgrades in Nautilus granted me."

I just need to take it off and open the interface; didn't want to do it without your permission though in case you thought I was going for a weapon or something." And no, he was not about to tell the User that a disc could be a weapon, even if he had no intention of using it as such. That would just be asking for trouble.

Date: 2023-06-17 04:59 am (UTC)"Anyway, do I have your permission to take it off and open the interface, User?" Oddly, the tone of the request sounded rather similar to a computerized voice assistant, minus the overly sugary cheerfulness. Crisp and calm, patiently waiting for the User to input a response.

Date: 2023-06-17 10:14 am (UTC)No. Wait.
Was that really the best answer or did this person draw them into it? Obviously Jenn was who they were thinking of most, because this person was clearly a security risk. So it would be Jenn. Or Ben. So thy could b manipulated into something to do with either of them. If Ben that mans the intruder is sniffing out for clues, and Jenn said never to give a mentalist the slightest clue. so nothing about Ben, and well Jenn was the big Back To The Future fan in the group. Well, either that or she thought watching it was prep enough to join a time travel project. Ian wasn't sure which.
Either way, anything Back to The Future could have been planted in their brain with subtle suggestion. So not that. Nothing to do with Jenn at all.
Okay, what about something to do with Addy or Magic?
Or did this person presume they would realize that Thy would realize that Jenn was too obvious and so this person expects them to go for a secondary target?
Okay so not Jenn, Ben, Addy, or Magic.
Janis?
No, this person could be working for Janis. So that was out.
What about something from the last leap? Like a basketball? Hard for them to have hidden one of those this whole time. Of course if they had somehow been spying on the last leap than a basketball would b too obvious. Of course the odds that anyone could have been spying on the leap were infinitesimally small. Which would make Ian feel a lot better if those weren't about the same odds as someone getting in here and walking into the chamber before tripping any alarms on a night that Jenn and Magic both happen to have taken off to sleep.
So nothing to do with Project Quantum Leap then. Or their friends.
But without this project and their friends... what did thy have left?
Well wasn't that a depressing question. And one to worry about later. After Ben and Sam were both back in 2023. Or whatever year it would b by the time they got Ben home.
Of course, on the topic of depressing... past Ian had a lot of experience with that, didn't they? And... that, of course, was the answer.
"Alright. No way you preprepared this one or somehow tricked me into thinking about it. "All the cheat codes known for the game Dark Souls as of 2018."
Ian was so busy outsmarting the mentalist they thought Clu must b, they... might have outsmarted themselves there as well.

Date: 2023-06-17 10:42 am (UTC)Clu held out one hand and concentrated. Assuming that the User would want a hard copy since they didn't seem too keen using any kind of device he had in his possession, he rezzed up a simple paper booklet labeled Dark Souls Cheat Codes. And contrary to the User's likely expectations, Clu didn't just whip out said booklet or cause it to appear suddenly. Rather it formed in his hand, at first as what looked like a digital wireframe, but quickly gaining solidity and stability.
A moment later and the booklet was fully formed, and he offered it to the User. "I can't vouch for how accurate all these are," he said. "But here you go; as requested." If Ian opened the booklet they would likely see a number of codes they were familiar with in the game, all from 2018 or earlier. Though there were a few errors in the descriptions of said codes. And for some reason the famous Konami code was included on the last page.

Date: 2023-06-18 06:46 am (UTC)"Ohhhh she's ticked...." Ian said softly as Jenn stepped out of the shadows and stalked down the hall towards them, clearly armed.
"Why are you standing here talking to a intruder, instead of taking the intruder into custody?!"
Ian looked down at themself, then all the way up at Clu before looking back at Jenn. "I kept our visitor here. But I think we all need to listen to..."
"Once the intruder is disarmed and in custody perhaps," Jenn said.
Ian glanced down at the cheat guide then an amused smile graced their lips. Well... this would be interesting.

"You know that whole speech? About needing rest? He wasn't just speaking to her, you now." She led them to one of the small conference rooms where they had held Janis for a while. She pointed to a seat. "Sit. Speak."
"Woof," Ian muttered under their breath.

Date: 2023-06-18 09:23 am (UTC)Instead he obediently sat down at the table, making sure to keep his hands in view. "Fair warning, what I'm about to tell you will be hard to believe," he said. "But I'm more than willing to provide evidence to back it up, as I was in the process of doing with Ian when you walked in." Clu then reiterated what he'd told Ian about himself, Nautilus, and how and why he'd come to be in their facility, then awaited Jenn's reaction.

Date: 2023-06-19 07:16 am (UTC)"You don't know if that is poisoned!" Jenn protested. She didn't even bother to say "no offense" to Clu.
"If our new friend wanted us dead so badly, pretty sure I'd be already dead. But if you'r so worried... I'll have yours too." And they pulled over a second.
Jenn glared. "Fine, but if you die of food poisoning, I'm not giving you mouth to mouth."
"Actually," Addy said breaking in, "That would b a stomach pump and induced vomiting. But if we could get back on track here?"
"Right," Magic said. He turned to Clu. "You said you're here investigating to see if we're some sort of... flaw, was it? Well now that you can see nothing is broken, why exactly are you still here? Not like we could stop you if you left the way you arrived."

Date: 2023-06-21 04:47 am (UTC)Anyway, back to the point. Clu took a sip of his own milkshake before replying to the admin. He nodded his confirmation that he had the correct term , then said, "A few reasons actually. First, I'm not quite done; I was going in close for a final scan when Ian spotted me and interrupted it. Second, up til now at least, because I wanted to explain to all of you. If I'd fled, you'd have all assumed that I was actually a threat, and it would have likely caused a huge disruption even after I was gone. Just being reasonable and explaining things solves that problem, and prevents Jenn from losing any more downtime than necessary. Besides, on a personal level, when I cause a disruption, I like it to be on purpose; since I did it by accident, minimizing the trouble and offering an explanation is just polite."
"And the third reason is that I shouldn't even be detectable while visiting a world like yours unless I deliberately try to be, but something about this anomaly overrode that without me even realizing it at first. I want to find out why that happened and how to prevent it from happening again if I ever encounter any similar anomalies. All of you have been pretty reasonable about this, all factors considered, but others might not be, and I'd like to avoid potential future problems if I can."

"Not to point out the obvious," Addy said, "But Ian doesn't exactly have time to play babysitter."
"True," Magic said. "But I don't see we have much choice at the moment. We can hardly arrest someone for trespassing who can vanish at will, conjure up whatever they wish, and doesn't seem inclined to leave."

Date: 2023-06-22 04:26 am (UTC)"Honestly once I finish my scans it'll mostly just be a lot of data analysis and I could do that pretty much anywhere, including this room, if that would make things easier for all of you," he said. "I've got no intention of getting underfoot or digging into your files. And I don't want to take Ian- or any of you, really- away from your normal functions any more than I already have, but I understand if you feel it's necessary to have someone watching me. It likely won't be too exciting though; watching someone going through scan data doesn't exactly make for riveting entertainment after all."
"Before that though, I did offer to let Ian examine my disc- this here-," he turned slightly in the chair to indicate the ring-shaped object docked on his back-, "as proof of both my story and my intentions. They wanted to wait until Jenn was present though, which is reasonable. The offer still stands, and since since this would provide not just Jenn but all of you a chance to observe, if you're willing, I can undock it and let them do so now."

Date: 2023-06-23 02:09 am (UTC)"One thing you do want to avoid is asking a program directly who their User is though. It's a question that has a great deal of weight to it for us for a variety of reasons, and is really only used in certain specific circumstances. Otherwise, the name of a program's User is something that can be given, but shouldn't be demanded."
