Normally it'd be an Angelii doing this sort of thing. But Clu was traveling alone- not counting Bit and his Pokemon, who were currently safely stored on his disc and in their Pokeballs, respectively-, and it didn't take the Sight to notice the odd warping of space-time that he'd run into. A warping that he'd followed back to its origin point on this world, out of concern for it potentially being a sign of a Flaw, or something that could become one. He'd briefly observed the glasses-wearing User, but they seemed intent on their work, so he turned his focus to the actual equipment that was the source of the anomaly.

Thus far, everything seemed stable, which was good. But it would likely be best to get a closer look. Stepping closer to the anomaly's epicenter, Clu reached out with all the senses available to him, wanting to be absolutely certain. So focused was he on his investigation, though, that he didn't spare a thought of what that anomaly might do to him. Nothing harmful, at least not directly so. But unbeknownst to him, it could disrupt whatever aspect of his nature as an Ashura that normally kept him invisible and otherwise imperceptible.

Which meant that Ian might just see a man in an odd outfit accented with stripes of glowing yellow light fading into view near the entrance to the accelerator.

Right up until the alarm went off, Clu was unaware that anything had changed. After all, he could always see, hear, and otherwise sense himself with no problem. But just because it had been awhile since the last time he'd gotten caught sneaking around didn't mean that he didn't immediately recognize security alert when he heard one.

He briefly considered teleporting away or otherwise fleeing the scene, but to do so would only make it seem like he'd been there to cause trouble, when in fact the opposite was true. Probably better to try an explain himself, however difficult that might be. As the User he'd seen before came rushing in in an apparent panic, Clu turned to face them, holding up his hands in a fairly universal gesture to indicate non-threatening status.

He offered them a very sheepish smile, hoping it would be further proof of his lack of threat. "Uh.... greetings?", he said. Because really what could one say in a situation like this?

"Fair enough," Clu said, keeping his hands up as he obediently headed back into what seemed to be the central hub of wherever this was. Whoever this User was, they didn't look like Security, and the task he'd seen them engaged in earlier implied some sort of stats-related function. Still, security was almost certainly on their way.

"Believe it or not, I'm not here to cause trouble," he assured the glasses-wearing User. "In fact I came here in hopes of doing the exact opposite, if it turned out to be needed."

Clu considered briefly before replying. Should he just come right out and say it, or should he deflect until he could give a more full explanation, however unbelievable it would likely sound to them? He opted for something close to the former. "I picked up a space-time anomaly and followed it back it its source," he said. "I wanted to make sure it didn't have the potential to cause damage."

Alright, User, you asked for it. "I'm a computer program who was summoned to an interdimensional hub called Nautilus," Clu said. "I spent several years living there during which time I learned a great deal about the User world, vastly expanded my original parameters, and gained a number of significant upgrades which allowed me to- among other things- travel between dimensions at will. After helping to restore full functionality to that interdimensional hub by assisting in the defeat of an entity who wanted to turn all of reality into glass, I left there to explore the various worlds, partly out of simple curiosity and partly to repair any Flaws- areas where the fabric of reality has been damaged- that I came across."

"The latter is what led me here. I was traveling between worlds and detected a space-time anomaly. I wanted to make certain that it wasn't a Flaw or a potential one, or to repair it if it was. Normally I'm undetectable by the inhabitants of the worlds I visit unless I choose not to be, so I wasn't expecting my visit to cause any trouble, but apparently there's some factor with the anomaly that I didn't account for though, and well... here we are."

Well he did warn you that it would be hard to believe. "Neither of those things," Clu said. "At least I don't think so; I've never tried to upload myself to a system from this side of the screen, and I'm not sure how to go about reversing the process that Nautilus used that allows me to exist in the User world to begin with. And that's assuming I was even compatible with your system, which is doubtful; the last time I was in an active system, the User year was 1982, and there's no telling how Nautilus' upgrades may have affected my compatibility. Besides, even if I could, I'm not sure the programs there would appreciate it, given that my original function is a hacking program. I was never the type to cause major problems- generally just helped my User out with his phone bill and things-, but technically I'd probably still be classed as malware."

"As for taking you to another dimension... it might be technically possible, but I don't know how safe it would be for someone who hasn't first Wakened in Nautilus to travel the Between, and Waking is a natural process, not something you or I can trigger. Even for people who been through Nautilus, it can still be dangerous. I wouldn't want to try it with you outside of an emergency."

"I can show you my disc, though if you'll allow it, and let you examine me physically. It should be pretty clear from that that I'm not human. And I can demonstrate some of the other abilities my upgrades in Nautilus granted me."

Clu looked briefly confused before realization dawned. "Ah, right," he said. "I forgot; a 'disc' tends to mean something different on this side of the screen. I mean my identity disc; this here." He indicated what looked like a ring-shaped throwing disc nestled snuggly on a dock on the back of his jacket; not something that was at all meant to go into a computer's drive.

"It doesn't need to be inserted into a system to read it. I just need to take it off and open the interface; didn't want to do it without your permission though in case you thought I was going for a weapon or something." And no, he was not about to tell the User that a disc could be a weapon, even if he had no intention of using it as such. That would just be asking for trouble.

Clu chuckled slightly. "It does kind of look like one, doesn't it?", he said. "But I assure you it's not a frisbee. Nor is this a prank; if it was, I'd have come up with something more fun, and probably more colorful."

"Anyway, do I have your permission to take it off and open the interface, User?" Oddly, the tone of the request sounded rather similar to a computerized voice assistant, minus the overly sugary cheerfulness. Crisp and calm, patiently waiting for the User to input a response.

"Bending," Clu said. "In Nautilus, physics and reality are a good deal more flexible. With a combination of willpower, imagination, and practice, a person in Nautilus can literally 'bend' reality to their will to varying degrees. It has a lot of uses, but by far the most common is rezzing up things that you want or need. And that ability is something you retain even after leaving Nautilus, assuming the connection to it is maintained."

"So I could Bend up some sort of innocuous object for you. I imagine seeing something rezzed out of thin air right in front of you would be a significant piece of evidence in favor of my story."

"So long as it's not something too obscure for me to picture or too large to fit in the space without causing damage, I should be able to rezz it up," Clu said. "And in the former case, I'd still try, though I might get some details wrong, for obvious reasons." Occasionally that happened even when he had a template to work from, but even then, the dandelions were recognizable.

Clu waited patiently while the User processed over what to challenge him with. In the end, their choice got a raised eyebrow, but he nodded. "Can't say I've ever played that one," he said. "2018 is a long time after I was anywhere near a game grid. But I'll give it a try." Hopefully the ephemeral nature of Bending and his Ashura abilities would be able to compensate for his lack of modern video game knowledge.

Clu held out one hand and concentrated. Assuming that the User would want a hard copy since they didn't seem too keen using any kind of device he had in his possession, he rezzed up a simple paper booklet labeled Dark Souls Cheat Codes. And contrary to the User's likely expectations, Clu didn't just whip out said booklet or cause it to appear suddenly. Rather it formed in his hand, at first as what looked like a digital wireframe, but quickly gaining solidity and stability.

A moment later and the booklet was fully formed, and he offered it to the User. "I can't vouch for how accurate all these are," he said. "But here you go; as requested." If Ian opened the booklet they would likely see a number of codes they were familiar with in the game, all from 2018 or earlier. Though there were a few errors in the descriptions of said codes. And for some reason the famous Konami code was included on the last page.

Clu gave a wry smile. "Yeah, I've had to drastically alter my parameters for deeming something 'impossible' too since I arrived in the User world," he said. Of course Nautilus tended to have that affect on everyone, but still... "I've found that a lot of things are defined as 'impossible'... until someone does them."

Overall, the User seemed satisfied with the results, up until the end when something apparently struck them as amusing. "Hmm? What's so funny?"

Oh yes, this woman was definitely security. Even if he hadn't already been informed she was on the way, the attitude and mannerisms were unmistakable. Clu put his hands back up, once again indicating his non-threatening status with a sheepish expression. "I thought their method of keeping me here and occupied was pretty effective, actually," he said. "And probably the safest method available, given that they don't seem to be a security type themselves." The User- apparently named Ian- had been nothing but reasonable so far, given the circumstances, so it was only right that he return the favor.

"In any case, as I told them, I'm not here to cause trouble. But since I doubt you'll take my word for that, I'll prove it, starting by going with you peacefully."

"You know that whole speech? About needing rest? He wasn't just speaking to her, you now." She led them to one of the small conference rooms where they had held Janis for a while. She pointed to a seat. "Sit. Speak."

Clu resisted the urge to snicker at Ian's quiet comment. It was amusing to him, but not for reasons that were at all relevant. And now certainly wasn't the time in any case.

Instead he obediently sat down at the table, making sure to keep his hands in view. "Fair warning, what I'm about to tell you will be hard to believe," he said. "But I'm more than willing to provide evidence to back it up, as I was in the process of doing with Ian when you walked in." Clu then reiterated what he'd told Ian about himself, Nautilus, and how and why he'd come to be in their facility, then awaited Jenn's reaction.

"Actually they asked for all the cheat codes to a video game called Dark Souls up until User year 2018," Clu said. "Which I provided, though I can't vouch for the accuracy of all the codes the booklet contains, since I was nowhere near a game grid at that time. Similarly, I don't have the predictive algorithms necessary to guarantee any lottery tickets I'd bend up for you would contain the winning numbers, though I'll do my best. As I understand it though, there are multiple drawings, even within the same sector. Do you want a specific one, or simply one of each?"

And judging by Jenn's reaction, the dark-skinned man who'd just entered must be her superior, possibly the facility's admin. The other woman's function was unknown, but something about her manner also suggested security, though not as aggressively as Jenn's. Perhaps the admin's lieutenant? Ah well, he expected he'd find out as the conversation continued.

Clu nodded, but rather than asking for particular requests this time, instead opted to simply Bend something that would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to carry around hidden. Placing one palm flat on the table, he focused for a moment, then digital wireframes took form in front of both himself and Magic, plus three more identical ones slightly off to one side on the table. A moment later, and the wireframes filled in, gaining form and solidity.

In front of both Clu and Magic were chocolate milkshakes in tall glasses, complete with straws and a dollop of whipped cream on top. And three more sitting nearby on the table. "Chocolate milkshakes," he identified them, in case there was any doubt. "I Bent enough for everyone."

Clu briefly gave Jenn a look at the implications of that; he didn't quite roll his eyes but it was close. Most of the reason he didn't was that he knew she was just performing her function; he couldn't really fault security for acting like security, but that didn't mean it wasn't annoying sometimes. "Yeah, even if I actually wanted to harm any of you, that's not my style," he said. "Besides, any hacker who needs to cause unnecessary damage to accomplish a task is just bad at their job."

Anyway, back to the point. Clu took a sip of his own milkshake before replying to the admin. He nodded his confirmation that he had the correct term , then said, "A few reasons actually. First, I'm not quite done; I was going in close for a final scan when Ian spotted me and interrupted it. Second, up til now at least, because I wanted to explain to all of you. If I'd fled, you'd have all assumed that I was actually a threat, and it would have likely caused a huge disruption even after I was gone. Just being reasonable and explaining things solves that problem, and prevents Jenn from losing any more downtime than necessary. Besides, on a personal level, when I cause a disruption, I like it to be on purpose; since I did it by accident, minimizing the trouble and offering an explanation is just polite."

"And the third reason is that I shouldn't even be detectable while visiting a world like yours unless I deliberately try to be, but something about this anomaly overrode that without me even realizing it at first. I want to find out why that happened and how to prevent it from happening again if I ever encounter any similar anomalies. All of you have been pretty reasonable about this, all factors considered, but others might not be, and I'd like to avoid potential future problems if I can."

"Speak for yourself," Jenn muttered.

"Not to point out the obvious," Addy said, "But Ian doesn't exactly have time to play babysitter."

Hearing that he was effectively surrounded by classified data would have been tempting under other circumstances, and still was a bit if he was being honest with himself. But despite what Jenn apparently thought of him, he had no intention of causing them any more trouble than he already had just by his presence.

"Honestly once I finish my scans it'll mostly just be a lot of data analysis and I could do that pretty much anywhere, including this room, if that would make things easier for all of you," he said. "I've got no intention of getting underfoot or digging into your files. And I don't want to take Ian- or any of you, really- away from your normal functions any more than I already have, but I understand if you feel it's necessary to have someone watching me. It likely won't be too exciting though; watching someone going through scan data doesn't exactly make for riveting entertainment after all."

"Before that though, I did offer to let Ian examine my disc- this here-," he turned slightly in the chair to indicate the ring-shaped object docked on his back-, "as proof of both my story and my intentions. They wanted to wait until Jenn was present though, which is reasonable. The offer still stands, and since since this would provide not just Jenn but all of you a chance to observe, if you're willing, I can undock it and let them do so now."

"I am a program, and no you weren't," Clu assured them. "Programs are written by Users to assist them in a variety of ways, each according to their individual functions. The only programs who might take offense to that fact being acknowledged are the likes of the MCP and his cronies, and trust me, if you ever met any of them you wouldn't be worried about offending them. Thank you for asking though."

"One thing you do want to avoid is asking a program directly who their User is though. It's a question that has a great deal of weight to it for us for a variety of reasons, and is really only used in certain specific circumstances. Otherwise, the name of a program's User is something that can be given, but shouldn't be demanded."
